Shane Hunter was raised in the Prince Albert Region of Saskatchewan, near the rural town of Birch Hills. He grew up in a family of entrepreneurs: his parents owned and operated Hunter Electrical, an electrical contracting company. Shane was immersed in the trade at a very young age. His father taught him to wire plugs and switches, dig trenches, and did a lot of sweeping up. He was a very young apprentice. As he got older, he became an employee in his parent’s company.
Shane’s family moved to California in 1999 to pursue their dreams of working in the solar industry. He began working with his father’s company, Excel Solar & Electric Inc. in 2001 and became foreman of his own crew in 2003, installing ground-mounted systems in Kenwood, California. He went on to build many systems with Excel Solar & Electric, resulting in several hundred kW of solar installations. These included roof mount systems for residential and vacation homes, ground mount systems in the hills of Sonoma County, wineries in the Napa Valley, generator back up systems, solar water pumping projects for winery irrigation, and wind turbine installation.
There he gained his knowledge and expertise in the solar field.
He returned to Saskatchewan in 2006 to continue and complete his Journeyman Electrician Red Seal.
Shane worked in various industrial establishments for the next ten years. He had the opportunity to work for Flyer Electric out of Birch Hills, SK. He was flown into the Uranium mines in Northern Saskatchewan, including Rabbit Lake Mine, and McLean Lake Mine, and Points North Landing where he did industrial electrical work.
In an attempt to be home more often to spend time with his 4 children, Shane took a job with Bourgault Industries doing electrical maintenance throughout the buildings doing LED retrofits, overhead cranes, welders, forklift maintenance, millwrighting and all preventative and predictive maintenance.
It became apparent that Shane was ready to follow in the entrepreneurial spirit of his family and decided to branch out and start his own company.
Shane and his wife Jennifer moved to Southern Saskatchewan to Radville. Meridian Solar & Electric was open for operation in March of 2016. The focus of the company was solar and renewables, and offering electrical contracting services to the surrounding area.
Meridian Solar & Electric Inc. has grown and changed in the past five years. The focus has become renewables and energy efficiency. Shane was chosen in 2020 to be the Regional Champion for Saskatchewan with Efficiency Canada. Efficiency Canada is the national voice for an energy-efficient economy. They envision a future where Canada uses energy efficiency to its fullest potential. This means maximizing the benefits of energy efficiency resulting in a sustainable environment, a productive economy, and a just and equitable society. Shane meets with the Efficiency Canada Regional Champions monthly and makes connections with people throughout the country to encourage change.
Shane also gained his Certified Energy Management certificate from the Association of Energy Engineers. CEMs optimize the energy performance of a facility, building or industrial plant. The CEM® is a systems integrator for electrical, mechanical, process, and building infrastructure, analyzing the optimum solutions to reduce energy consumption in a cost-effective approach.
